For me, schooling is one part of one's educational development. But what we see is that, teachers expect students to spend all their time studying to pass an examination which may not even be relevant to their career.
Don't get me wrong. Studying is good and I believe whatever you do must be done excellently.
Nonetheless, if I were to start uni right out of high school, these are some of the things I would do differently:
👉🏿 Choose a study programme I like or find interesting not because it's popular or my friends are doing same.
👉🏿 Create my own curriculum outside what the school provides by learning other interesting skills that are not being taught in school. This way I get to own my education.
👉🏿 Apply for relevant internships and student jobs if I get the chance. Working as a student in any role or industry is fine but getting one in the area you find interesting and it's relevant to your education is a plus for you and gives you the chance to gain relevant skills for the future.
👉🏿 Build an online presence and share my educational journey and experience with the world. Your online presence is somewhat your ticket to building the future you desire. By sharing your journey, people get to appreciate your experiences and may create opportunities in terms of jobs, clients when you decide to start your business and even further studies. You basically get to connect with people from different backgrounds, which brings me to my final point.
👉🏿 Build a network. This network may include mentors, business partners, clients, recruiters, friends and even romantic partners 🤪.
You don’t have to wait till you are done with school before you take ownership of your education and personal brand. You can do that now.
What would you do differently if you had to start university right out of high school?
What are you doing currently in owning your education as a student?
I'd love to hear from you 😊
